Duckmanton area workshops

Engaging in a massive mechanisation program in a huge area like Number 1 Area (Chesterfield) would require an equally big central workshop and stores to support this. With this in mind, the area engineers was tasked with fulfilling this  need.


Work was started on a site adjacent to the Markham and Ireland collieries to build a purpose built facility to encompass all needs of a rapidly advancing industry.


The workshops were broadly divided into three major departments with relevant sub departments:


Fitting and Machine shop

Plating shop 

  • dowty props
  • boring bits and pick sharpening

  • shotfiring batteries
